About this book

This book from Lokbharati Prakashan is a Hindi medium (हिन्दी माध्यम) title by Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar', meant for readers of Hindi poetry (हिंदी काव्य), students of Hindi literature, and anyone drawn to the Mahabharata. < cite index="226-1">रश्मिरथी, whose name means the rider of a chariot of sun-rays, is a celebrated khandkavya composed by the great Hindi poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar. It was published in 1952 and contains seven cantos. Every side of Karna's character is brought to life in it: lifting Karna above the Mahabharata's own narrative, Dinkar sets him on new ground of morality and trustworthiness and crowns him with dignity. < cite index="231-1">The work is drawn from the Mahabharata and tells the story of Karna — supremely brave and the greatest of givers. It does not merely display his valour and generosity; it raises searching questions about caste discrimination and injustice. The dialogues in every canto carry a dramatic quality, and the writing combines clarity, ease, naturalness and accessibility with real force. < cite index="230-1">Among its best-known sections is Karna's arrival at the ashram of Parashurama, where the description of the hermitage gives way to the social teaching the guru imparts, and where Karna's character is presented in its most vigorous form, with valour, austerity and action held up as what matters. The third canto, containing Krishna's warning to the Kaurava court, is among the most quoted passages in modern Hindi poetry and is recited widely to this day. Dinkar himself was honoured as Rashtrakavi and received the Jnanpith Award and the Padma Bhushan. The whole book is written in Hindi in the Devanagari script (देवनागरी लिपि).
